When I heard that the old #RGS building was going to be demolished soon, I decided to make an effort to join this year’s #RGSreunion #RGSalumnae lunch. Thanks to my seniors Wannee Tang and Ng Yeuk Lung, who sent me the information and made the registration for me.
Having first become an #architect, and, later, an #actress slash #emcee slash #TVpersonality , I so very rarely ran into any of my classmates. Most of them are in the corporate world. Or have become doctors or lawyers or teachers. Or have married and become tai tais. (All very sensible choices. Now, what was I thinking choosing to follow my dream to become an actress?)
So, this being my first time back to school, and my first time seeing my old classmates and teachers again in decades, I was actually slightly anxious. What do I wear? What do normal people wear to school reunions? So I settled on my #OOTD camel coloured pants with my oversized shirt that I bought from Korea.
A lovely girl called Cheryl took us on a tour, and, I was mortified to find that I did not recognise any little bit of the school at all… I hadn’t been back since I left RGS, and, of course, since then, they had taken over Anderson Secondary School, and had rebuilt most of the school. Where was the old school field? What happened to the old tennis courts? And the old air rifle range where I was caught sneaking into and sent to detention? Gone, all gone… Speaking of detention, I was very pleased to see Mr Goh, the PE teacher who caught us, and he is looking very well…
I think my favourite part of this new, and soon-to-be-demolished RGS is actually the containers that housed the Sec 1 classes called J Block. Unpretentious and so cozy…
We did not remember the Math problems being so difficult…
The kids must be so much cleverer than we were back then…
The highlight of the day was of course meeting our principal, Mrs Chee, and some of the old teachers again.
Mrs Cecilia Ang, lady in blue in the bottom picture, looks fabulous. I cannot believe that she is almost 70! Her secret, she says is an active lifestyle, walking lots and exercising. I saw the discipline mistress Mrs Pearlyn Seah from afar, I wanted to go over to say hello, but, I must confess that she still scares me after all these years. I could not remember many of the teachers… I wonder if they remember most of us… too. Some of them looked sort of familiar, but what subject did they teach? Which year did they teach me…? And, are they proud of how we had turned out? Do they care? What would they say if they knew that, after all these years, with the best of their intentions, we still feel a little bit lost…
